The holidays bring us so much joy and love but can often leave us feeling … IDK Maybe … exhausted, depleted, bloated and disconnected? Maybe it’s just me…
Here are 5 simple ways you can start feeling better TODAY.
Wean off the holiday treats
I know. It can seem really difficult and discouraging sometimes. But it doesn’t have to be. No need to punish. Just make conscious decisions to support what your body + mind are craving after the potentially indulgent holidays. Try to go a few days without alcohol if you can. Start your mornings with warm lemon water. End your evenings with herbal tea. This ALONE with help you reconnect + recover. Increase your water intake! This will help flush out toxins, curb cravings, and get your digestive system back on track. Eating out with friends + family? Go for the greens (no the fried brussels sprouts). A big salad with a healthy protein will do the trick.
Sweat
This is an essential for me. It keeps me grounded and helps me get back into my body after a period of a few days feeling quiteeee disconnected. Get to a class. Grab the family for a walk. Park far away from the store. Whatever it means for you this season, get it in. My sister and I have been going for evening walks and my GOODNESS, they are a freaking game changer (and so not sweaty or “hard”). It’s not about the calorie burn. It’s about reconnecting to your body, spirit, and mind. And showing up for yourself consistently, even when it seems more difficult to do so. This morning I took a HIIT class. It kicked my butt. It was not the most enjoyable thing in the world. But I did it anyway. And that felt good. Also, I swear I was sweating out smoked salmon and dirty martinis…#yolo.
Rest
If our holidays were at all similar…you are exhausted. The combination of more processed carbohydrates, sugar, late nights, and packed schedules leaves us all feeling wiped. Give yourself permission to rest. If you purposefully allow some space to wind down, you will recover far quicker and be ready to start again in no time. A good night’s sleep will make it a hundred times easier to make good decisions that next day. Cravings tend to sky rocket when we’re tired, so seriously, if it means skipping your morning workout for an extra hour of sleep, I say do it.
Set intentions
I recommend doing this daily. It helps create a nice light + easy structure to your days without feeling rigi and driving you crazy. Set a daily intention and stick to it. Simply sticking to a goal/intention during this time of year feels like a massive accomplishment. Start thinking about your intentions for the new year ahead. What do you want to bring to life this year? What worked this last year + what didn’t? How are you going to go about making it all happen?
